UCA – UdL partnership
University of Clermont Auvergne (UCA) aims to make its PhD programmes more visible internationally. In order to enhance the visibility of the academic sites of the COMUE (community of universities and institutions) of Lyon and the Doctoral School College of UCA, the colleges of these two universities have decided to conduct joint actions to promote doctoral studies in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (AuRA) Region.
In February 2019, UCA therefore submitted an International Ambition Pack project to the region to promote doctoral studies at UdL and UCA.
In order to pursue to principle goal of enhancing the reach and attractiveness of the universities and research bodies in the AuRA Region, the project proposes structuring actions to promote co-supervised PhDs. This will make it possible to create real synergies at the regional level and develop the existing partnership between these two universities. This pooling of resources constitutes a major advantage for attracting young talent to the AuRA Region, offering the possibility of forging a reputation at both European and international level.
This structuring project, funded by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, will also make it possible to promote the regional offer in terms of PhD courses, by involving all players in the technology transfer and entrepreneurship process. At the European level, it will make it possible to create a network of academic partners par excellence and to develop scientific cooperation thanks to the co-supervised research.
Participation in international careers fairs, such as Nature Career Jobs in London in 2019, aims first and foremost to enhance the employability of PhD holders, bringing them up against the realities of the socio-economic world and enabling them to discover new international opportunities. It also enables the two universities to share and capitalise on their experience of foreign programmes, in order to take stock of and improve their own course offer. During the three years of the International Ambition Pack, the two partner Universities planned the following: the first year, participation in a careers fair in London, which they succeeded in doing, followed by participation in a careers fair in New York, which they were unable to do. During the second year, the two universities were due to take part in two careers fairs in Germany, which they were unable to do due to the Covid crisis. During the third year, they were due to take part in two careers fairs in the Netherlands.
The trip to London on 2 October enabled 12 PhD students and four representatives from the two universities to attend two events of international importance. On the first day, the open day for the new Campus France space in the United Kingdom, at which the participants were able to meet French-speaking students and present the various institutions in Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Clermont-Ferrand, as well as the various programmes available. Then, on the second day, the Nature Career Jobs fair, at which the University of Bordeaux, the University of Lille and the Institut Pasteur were also present. As a result, the PhD students were able to meet representatives of companies and major European universities and take part in various workshops (correcting a CV, the importance of expanding one’s international network) and attend conferences on recruiters’ expectations.
